The Beauty and Danger of an Activated Spillway
An activated spillway may look beautiful, but it serves a very important purpose. Spillways activate when reservoir or lake levels rise from rainfall, runoff, or increased inflow. They are designed to safely release excess water and help protect the dam, surrounding infrastructure, waterways, and community from flooding or pressure buildup.
While impressive to watch, activated spillways can be extremely dangerous due to strong currents, turbulence, slippery surfaces, sudden drops, and fast-moving debris.

• Never swim, fish, or climb near a spillway
• Obey warning signs and barriers
• Keep children and pets away from moving water
