π§ Did you know? WATER is life, but STORMWATER tells a story! πβ‘
π§ WATER WISDOM
π»π¦ HOW DOES WATER CLIMB A TREE WITHOUT A LADDER?
WAITβ¦ WATER CAN TRAVEL UPHILL? π²π³
Imagine a giant tree standing tall in your neighborhood.
Its roots are buried underground, but its leaves may be dozens of feet above the ground.
So how does water travel from the roots all the way to the highest branches?
π³ MEET NATURE’S AMAZING WATER ELEVATOR!
π§ STEP 1 β THE ROOTS: A tree absorbs water from the soil through its roots.
πΏ STEP 2 β THE TINY TUBES: Water moves through special tissues called xylem, which transport water upward.
βοΈ STEP 3 β THE LEAVES: Water evaporates from the leaves through a process called transpiration. This creates a pulling force that helps draw more water upward!
π€― HERE’S THE REALLY AMAZING PART!
Water molecules stick to one another through a property called cohesion, helping maintain continuous columns of water inside the tree.
Together with transpiration, this allows water to travel remarkable distances upward without a mechanical pump!
π³ No batteries!
π No electricity!
πͺ No ladders!
Just an incredible natural system!
π THIS WEEK’S WATER WISDOM:
TREES DON’T NEED ELEVATORS β NATURE BUILT ONE INSIDE THEM! π³π¦
The next time you look at a tall tree, remember that water is traveling through its hidden plumbing system to help keep it alive!

π¦«ποΈ MEET NATURE’S FURRY WATER ENGINEERS!
WHO BUILDS DAMS WITHOUT BLUEPRINTS, HARD HATS OR CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT? π€
BEAVERS! π¦«π
These fascinating animals are among nature’s most remarkable landscape engineers!
Using branches, mud, sticks and other natural materials, beavers build dams that can change how water moves through a landscape.
π€― THEIR SECRET SUPERPOWERS!
𦫠SUPERPOWER #1 β SLOWING THE FLOW!
Beaver dams can slow moving water and create ponds and wetlands.
πΏ SUPERPOWER #2 β CREATING HABITATS!
Beaver wetlands can provide habitat for fish, amphibians, birds, insects, and other wildlife.
π§ SUPERPOWER #3 β HOLDING WATER!
In suitable landscapes, beaver ponds and wetlands can temporarily store water and influence how it moves downstream.
π SUPERPOWER #4 β TRAPPING SEDIMENT!
Slower-moving water can allow suspended soil particles to settle, helping retain sediment in some beaver wetlands.
𦫠STORMWATER WOW FACT!
Beavers are called ecosystem engineers because their activities can physically reshape streams, wetlands, and surrounding habitats!
Their dams aren’t beneficial in every locationβthey can sometimes flood roads or propertyβbut in the right setting, they can provide valuable ecological benefits.
