The 3rd Annual Model Water Tower Competition was a tremendous success this year, bringing together students, educators, sponsors, and community leaders to celebrate innovation, engineering, and the importance of water resources.
This year’s competition featured three participating schools: Conyers Middle School, General Ray Davis Middle School, and Memorial Middle School. Students designed and built model water towers and competed to see whose tower performed the best under testing conditions.
The winning teams were:
🥇 1st Place: Memorial Middle School – Team SFOTH
🥈 2nd Place: General Ray Davis Middle School – Team H2O2
🥉 3rd Place: General Ray Davis Middle School – Team Mason and Charles Water Company
We are incredibly grateful to our sponsors whose generous support helped make this event possible. Special thanks to Kamstrup, McKim & Creed, Ferguson, Pro Cutters, CERM, Inframark, and Consolidated for investing in our students and the future of water resources.
The RWR family worked diligently behind the scenes to ensure everything was in place and that the competition ran smoothly from start to finish. Their teamwork and dedication helped create a memorable and successful event.
This competition is truly the vision and passion of Maria Flint, who attended a similar competition in another county and wanted to bring that same opportunity to students in Rockdale County. Three years ago, she started the very first Model Water Tower Competition here with just one school and three towers. Today, the event has grown to include three schools and twelve towers, and it continues to expand each year.
The competition was held at Johnson Park for the second year in a row. The inaugural competition was hosted at the Rockdale Water Resources Water Treatment Plant, and since then the event has continued to grow thanks to strong community support.
The day began with an opening ceremony featuring remarks from several community leaders and supporters. Water Resources Director Kimbry Peek welcomed participants, and representatives from each sponsor shared encouraging words with the students. Rockdale County Chairwoman VanNess, Commissioner Smith, and Commissioner Williams also addressed the crowd. The Chairwoman of the Board of Education spoke as well, and Superintendent Shirley Chesser was in attendance to support the students and their achievements.
Serving as the Master of Ceremonies for the program was Deputy Director Vaughn Jamison, who helped guide the event and keep the excitement going throughout the day.
We are also deeply thankful for the many volunteers and Rockdale County departments that came out to support the event. Their time, dedication, and enthusiasm helped make this year’s competition another outstanding success.
From three towers in the first year to twelve towers this year, the Model Water Tower Competition continues to grow bigger and better each year. We look forward to seeing even more schools and students participate as we continue building excitement around STEM education and careers in water resources.
